This painting records the surrender of the town of Breda by Dutch soldiers to the Spanish. In the center is a Dutch commander who is giving the key to the town to the Spanish, who accepts with some amount of grace. The painting shows off Spanish power even though the age of Conquest in the "New World" for them is coming to an end.
