Il Canzoniere
Title
Il Canzoniere
Description
Petrarch is often considered the father of Renaissance humanism; he is perhaps best known for rediscovering the works of the Roman orator Cicero. Petrarch recognized Cicero’s significance and sought to understand him as a human being. Petrarch is best known for his sonnets. Il Canzoniere is mostly made up of Petrarch’s sonnets, and the book was written in the Italian vernacular rather than in Latin. This language choice exemplifies a major aspect of Renaissance thought; because books and ideas began to be written and taught in the vernacular, jobs and opportunities opened up for people who could not read and speak Latin. Petrarch is also known for catalyzing a systematic search for the works of Classical authors and encouraging engagement with their works.
