David
Title
David
Description
Donatello is considered the greatest sculptor of the Early Renaissance. Much like Giotto, he paved the way for his successors in terms of using Classical techniques and portraying natural beauty rather than idealized beauty. Donatello’s bronze David is a departure from Byzantine style and is an excellent example of the Renaissance ideal of natura naturata. This term reflects the idea of capturing what nature is and being as realistic as possible with one’s art. Donatello’s David is meant to be realistic and capture natural beauty, an ideal that paved the way for future innovations in Renaissance art.
